Wildcats Sweep Men’s Outdoor Athletes of the Week Awards

first_imgFRISCO, Texas – Abilene Christian’s Jared Williams and Kai Schmidt are the Southland Conference Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week, the league announced Wednesday. All Southland Athletes of the Week are presented MidSouth Bank.The Wildcat duo competed at their home track over the weekend at the Wes Kittley Invitational. Williams took first in the 400-meter event while also helping his ACU squad to a first-place team finish in the 4x400m relay. Kai Schmidt took first place in the shot put and second overall in the discus.Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week – Jared Williams, Abilene Christian – So. – Channelview, TexasWilliams boosted his 4x400m relay team to a first-place overall finish by a narrow .55-second margin. ACU’s relay team finished the course with a time of 3:09.97. The sophomore also claimed a first-place individual finish in the 400m dash, beating out 17 other competitors. The Channelview, Texas product blazed past the finish line with a 47.24 clip, marking the ninth fastest NCAA Division I time of the season.Honorable Mention: Tremayne Flagler, Northwestern State; Julien Jeandree, Central Arkansas; Tyler Smith, McNeese; Garett Cortez, Incarnate Word.Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week – Kai Schmidt, Abilene Christian – Sr. – Krefeld, GermanySenior Kai Schmidt won the shot put against Texas Tech’s Eric Kicinskig and Sam Houston State’s Michael Nichols with his best effort of 18.21m (59-9). Schmidt’s marks in the shot put and discus events sealed Southland season bests as the senior launched a 191-2 in the discus, in addition to his shot put efforts.Honorable Mention: LaRon James, Northwestern State; P.J.
