first_imgA Bibb County man and woman guilty of murder will serve 30 years in prison for their involvement in the 2015 murder of Samantha Payne of Maplesville. That’s the sentence handed down by Judge Brad Almond to Alyssa Watson and Marcus George. Both were found guilty by a jury last month of first-degree kidnapping and felony murder.During the trial, prosecutors showed evidence that Watson and George helped in Payne’s kidnapping and torture before a third suspect, Michael Belcher, stabbed Payne in the neck. Hunters found her decapitated body tied to a tree in the Talladega National Forest a week after her murder. Before the sentencing, George and Watston’s loved ones pleaded with Almond to be lenient in his sentencing, saying George has young children and Watson is expected to give birth within the next month.Meanwhile, Payne’s mother Susanne Payne asked that they both spend the rest of their lives in prison. Despite the ruling, Payne said she’s satisfied with the sentence.“It meant a lot to me, it really did,” Payne said. “I feel like Sam is here and every time they would look at us they would see her just smiling back at them. I think where she’s at now she’s happy and she is smiling.”Michael Belcher is scheduled to go on trial for capital murder in February. Two others involved in Payne’s murder, Chylli Bruce and Steven George, both pleaded guilty to their involvement in Payne’s murder and testified against George and Watson.Steven George is serving life in prison with the possibility of parole and Bruce is serving a 20-year split sentence wherein she’ll serve five years in prison and 15 years on probation.
